Finding a Mentor to Find Your Niche
Selecting a great niche is arguably the most important aspect of succeeding in an eCommerce business for us “small guys”. Finding a mentor to help with your niche can be one of the smartest moves you ever make!
Finding a mentor can have a multitude of benefits. You may find yourself asking “Why leave this to chance”? The wrong product mix can leave you trying to sell stuff that no one buys.
You may also find a hot selling product, but the margins are so small you will struggle to make any
profits over the long term. How can you choose the right path?
A mentor can help
As with any type of business, or in any aspect of life, it sometimes takes a mentor. A mentor is someone with an innate knowledge of your area of interest.
Be careful, however, as there are many “gurus” who preach a mentor-type relationship, only to take your money. They have no real vested interest in your success.
When you make your choices for a candidate, ask a bunch of questions. Make a list and refer to it. Do a lot of research online to find profiles of successful people in your field.
When deciding on a mentor, ask what kind of guarantee they offer. Normally, this won’t be a problem if they a mentoring program as part of their portfolio.
If it is, simply move on and find someone else. You don’t want to deal with a situation where they offer you low-quality advice which produces bad results. They should know all the necessary components of your online business endeavors.
Nothing about online business success is guaranteed, but stick with mentors that offer solid advice centered around traditional business techniques. It is tempting to listen to the “breakthrough gurus” that teach unconventional techniques, but these can be dangerous and flawed.
You should be able to consult with them on your plans and goals, and be able to bounce ideas off of them. They, in turn, should be able to guide you in the right direction.
Ask them to produce a plan before you agree to work with them. If it seems like it makes sense, then you can proceed with them.
Don’t be afraid to spend some money on a great mentor. In fact, paying more will save you in headaches and prevent you from wasting money. If you find people who are willing to mentor you for cheap, this could be a sign of inexperience or incompetence.
eCommerce and online business is very popular, so good mentors are going to command high rates. Quality mentors will cost a bit of money, but there are many that prove their worth in the long run.
Look for a mentor with a track record
Ask a potential mentor for examples of projects they have worked on. Don’t accept a mere list of websites they have mentored-ask for deeper explanations on the set up and strategy.
Ideally, you want someone who has their own website set up and is still profiting from it.
How do you know if a mentor is helping?
Make sure you have a way of measuring the success of your mentor. Work
with him or her to come up with a set of metrics that can help you
keep on track.
Make a list yourself on what you hope to accomplish or learn. Be honest about your weak areas- that’s what you need a mentor for!
For example if you are not comfortable being a leader, or achieving goals, then add these as part of your mentoring “wish list”.
